How To Deal With Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a relatively common skin problem, primarily affecting adults (especially older adults). These unsightly and sometimes, uncomfortable varicose veins can be frustrating to deal with if you do not know what to do about them. There are many options that you can try when you have varicose veins, whether you want to seek out medical help right away or you want to try to cope with them on your own. Get to know some of the ways to deal with varicose veins. Then, you should get started giving these methods a try as soon as possible.

Avoid Standing or Sitting for Long Periods of Time

One of the best ways to cope with the discomfort of varicose veins is to watch how much time you spend either standing or sitting. When you are standing or sitting, the leg veins experience more pressure. This pressure can cause further swelling and discomfort in your varicose veins.

Take frequent breaks from sitting or standing throughout the day. If you cannot help standing or sitting for long periods of time because of work, do leg stretches periodically throughout the day to help reduce that pressure and get your legs moving a bit. Try to walk around on any breaks you get as well, as this will also help alleviate pressure.

Start Wearing Compression Stockings

Another way to cope with varicose veins is to wear compression stockings. Compression stockings are designed to put pressure on the legs. This pressure helps to prevent blood pooling which is often caused by varicose veins and can contribute to the discomfort you feel. The compression stockings help to get your blood circulating properly. These stockings should be worn throughout the day to be the most effective. Often, doctors recommend this coping strategy in varicose vein treatment before they will move on to more aggressive treatment protocols.

Opt for Surgical Varicose Vein Treatments

If your varicose veins or the pain associated with them is severe, there are several different surgical options to consider. Sclerotherapy is one such option and involves injecting a chemical solution into the veins feeding the varicose veins. The chemical solution causes scars to develop in those veins, essentially closing the veins and preventing blood flow to the bundle of varicose veins. The varicose vein bundles will then shrink and become less problematic because they no longer have a blood supply to maintain them,

Other options are fairly similar. They include laser surgery in which the laser is used instead of a chemical solution to close off the veins. Actual removal of some of the veins is an option as well, but often doctors only use this in extreme cases or when other options have not been sufficient in dealing with a patient's varicose veins.

Now that you know more about ways to deal with varicose veins, you can contact a doctor and start varicose vein services right away.
